Organizing and Storing Children's Clothes

I've had a lot of people ask me what I did while the kiddos were gone last week. I wish I could say I painted a room or totally redecorated the laundry room that needs some TLC.

Instead, I did things that I can't usually do when the kids are around. Some I consider "me things" like reading, sleeping, going on dates with my hubby, watching my t.v. shows and just piddling around the house. But I did spend a lot of time rearranging, decluttering and storing things away. Which I'm sure is no surprise for those who really know me. 

This was a perfect time to focus on spring cleaning and to finish up some of the Simple Mom projects that I didn't get a chance to finish, and also to tackle her 10 day schedule to a simpler home she writes about in her book.

One of the projects that I had on my list was to clean out the kids closets.

The first thing on my list was to get rid of unnecessary clothes, then store them away.

 Before I dive into that process, I'm going to share with you how I hang my kids clothes. This helps make the overall process go faster and easier.



How to Hang Small Children's Clothes in Closets.

The system I use for hanging my kids clothes up is very helpful especially during the first 18 months of a child's life. Mostly because of all the clothing they get from showers and the rapid changes that take place concerning their sizes.


I use white hangers for all clothing, and put a colored hanger (pink for my girl and blue for my boy) in between sizes and seasons.

Then in the bottom of the kids closets I have a plastic storage tub that I throw outgrown or past season clothes in.

Right now is a hard time of year to completely delete winter clothes because it can be 80 degrees for two weeks, and then randomly snow. I know. That's weird Texas weather for ya. So I'm doing this process cautiously.

First let me emphasize a little on a plastic storage tub vs. a cardboard box. Sure- you're saving money using the cardboard box, but what if there is a leak? And those yucky varmints that creep into the attic? My point exactly- trust me the plastic is an investment especially if you plan on saving clothes for future children like I do.

If you have a boy and a girl like I do, use two different color of bins. I use blue for my boys clothes and red for my girls. This helps for a quick grab for future use.

Also, don't just get any plastic bins. I have learned through experience that the Rubbermaid Roughneck bins are absolutely the best. They are a little more expensive, but they don't collapse when stacked on top of each other or warp with the heat. And the snap lids actually stay snapped. 


With that being said....... When the bin in the closet has reached it's fullest capacity, I empty the bin and put a layer of softner sheets in the bottom. Then I fold the clothes up nice and neat. I add more sheets mid-way through and on the top. Then I snap the lid on, and prepare for labeling.

When I label I use cardstock paper because it's so sturdy. You could even go a step further and get it laminated or put it in a page protector, but I'm usually doing good just to keep up with this system. I label in VERY big letters what's in the tub and put it on the side of the bin.


I am fortunate enough to have a very spacey attic to store things in. So when it's time to put the bin in the attic I make sure the label is facing out so it can be found easily and seen clearly. This prevents unnecessary unstacking. 

This is a great system in case you aren't finished having children, and if you decide you're done after all- the clothes are already separated for you to use in a garage sale, to donate to a friend or give away. The softener sheets help prevent the musty smell that comes from storing away clothes. Plus if you find you don't need those clothes for future children- they draw buyers in at a garage sale or make for a sweet gesture to a friend you may want to give them to.

  3. Oh you did a great job on those closets! And to do it on "your time" is generous of you! Of course as long as it made you happy and feeling accomplished is all that counts. I like the idea of putting softener sheets in the bottom of the tubs - hadn't thought of that. Have a good day!
